Google Calendar is NOT Standard Compliant
I've signed up for Google Calendar.
Now, I am trying to announce that I will be speaking at an upcoming Glibane conference in San Francisco. Unfortunately, it isn't easy. You have to hand code the details of your event. Google has provided some instructions on publishing your event.
Here is what I have to write by hand!
action=TEMPLATE
text=Rod's Talk on Enterprise Blogging
location=2 New Montgomery St, San Francisco, CA 94105 (Palace Hotel)
details=Rod Boothby is giving a presentation on the Business Case for Enterprise Blogging:<br><br>
Gilbane San Francisco<br><br>
Conference on Technologies for Content Applications<br><br>
Conference on Enterprise Digital Rights Management
dates=20060425T154500Z/20060425T164500Z

It would be much easier if Google created this for me. But, I am sure they will add that.
Unfortunately, there are two bigger problems with Google Calendar, and they are the kind of problems that make me nervous about a Web Office standards war.
1) Google's format is not compliant with the hCalendar microformat. Here's what that format looks like:
<span class="vevent">
<a class="url" href="http://lighthouseseminars.com/gilbane_sf_06/sf_06.html">
<span class="summary">Gilbane San Francisco</span>:
<abbr class="dtstart" title="2006-04-24">April 24</abbr>-
<abbr class="dtend" title="2006-04-26">April 26</abbr>,
at the <span class="location">Palace Hotel, San Francisco, CA</span>
</a>
</span>
2) Google isn't playing nice with Microsoft's Live Clip standard. Live Clip is great idea, and Microsoft is doing the right thing by releasing the standard on the Creative Commons license. It would be a real shame for everyone if Google chooses not to support it. To see more, check out the Live Clip screen casts.

Hey Isaac,
Very funny.
But I hope you are not saying that Google should avoid complying with standards just because Ray Ozzy came up with them. That would be evil, no?
Web 2.0 works when you play nice with others
